Maya is a queer, mixed-race writer and multi-media artist based in New York City.
Her finely-detailed and boldly-outlined visual work is inspired by ancient Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, Indian, Greek, and Roman art and archaeology. She also draws influence from elements of pop art, comic books & graphic novels, illuminated manuscripts, Indian folk paintings, wood cuttings, blackwork tattooing, symbolist paintings, ink illustration, and various types of textile work. Her subjects often center around the mythical and the fantastical, and integrate multiple disparate concepts, images, and forms of art into one coherent image. She also incorporates her notes from law school into many of her sketches and drawings.
As a law student and aspiring civil rights attorney, Maya is focused on LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, policy and legislative advocacy, and how the intricacies of administrative systems and bureaucracy function. Much of her work as an artist also draws upon this experience and knowledge of the legal system.
